Photography Mentoring Day for Schools

For the second consecutive year, I ran a specialist mentoring day with The Creative Education Trust for their Year 10 students.

Working closely with the Trust beforehand, the day was designed to give the students valuable insight into working in the industry with real responsibility to deliver images that the Trust would then use. Teamwork was another important element embedded into the day, with students working closely together in small groups from different schools.  Students had to apply to take part in the experience, submitting 3 of their strongest images along with a statement explaining their motivation.

Before the event, an inter-school debate competition, I delivered an online briefing. This got them to consider practical steps that they would need to take to prepare for the event. We also discussed what type of shots and the variety they would need to deliver to meet their client’s expectations, and how they might best approach the day as an individual and as part of a team.

On the day my role was to guide them through the process, offering support and encouragement along the way.

It was rewarding to see each of them grow in confidence throughout the day and get fully stuck into the challenge of using their camera in a new and challenging environment. It was also impressive to see how quickly they organised themselves within their teams and communicated well with people they had only just met.

After the event, each student was asked to submit 10 of their best images from the day, which I then gave individual feedback on and also fed back about how they approached the day.

Another true highlight of the year.
